# Configure Poly Rove B4 Multicell Mode for 8x8 Services

## Objective

Configure your Poly Rove B4 base station and associated handsets to create a multicell system in order to increase signal coverage and to aid in preventing dropped calls. Instructions for backing up and restoring your Poly Rove B4 configuration are also covered in this guide, to aid in the event that a base unit fails and a replacement base is needed. Note that support assistance for Muti-Cell is handled by HP and not by 8x8 Support.

## Supported Devices

- Poly Rove B4 Base Station
- Poly Rove B20 Handset
- Poly Rove B30 Handset
- Poly Rove B40 Handset

## Supported Features

- When Configured in multicell mode, the Rove B4 system will support up to 200 users/handsets.
  - Each base station supports up to 30 handsets (200 handsets requires at least 9 base units).
- The Rove B4 supports the B20, B30 and B40 handsets.
- High Availability:
  - If a primary or secondary base station fails, the system will recover (see below for more detail and exceptions).

## Before You Begin

Here are a few key points you’ll need to keep in mind before configuring your Poly Rove B4 Multicell system.

### Device IP Addresses

- To determine the IP address of each device after plugging them into the network, it’s recommended to use an IP scanner or the network ARP table to pair each MAC address to an IP address.
- Before provisioning, the web interface of your devices can be accessed at the (unsecure) **HTTP** address: **http://<device_IP_address>**, using the default username (**admin**) and password (**admin**). Note that during the initial log in, a prompt will be displayed to change the default password. The original and changed password will work only until the device is provisioned for 8x8.
- After provisioning, the web interface of your devices can be accessed at the (secure) **HTTPS** address: **https://<device_IP_address>** with the username (**admin**) and its new password, which can be obtained from 8x8 Admin Console.

### Retrieving Device Passwords

Newly-provisioned devices, and devices which have been reassigned to different users, will receive a new administrator password. Follow the steps in this KnowledgeBase article to view and retrieve device passwords:

## Configuration Procedure

The Rove multi-cell system has three elements, which are addressed in this article:

- A **Primary** base
- One or more **Secondary** bases
- One or more handsets

### Obtain the Primary Base Station MAC Address

During this process, you’ll need the MAC address of your chosen Primary base station.

> 
> **Only the Primary base and your handset devices are configured in 8x8 Admin Console.** Secondary base stations are added to the multi-cell system as outlined later in this document.

1. To begin, select one of your Rove B4 bases as the **Primary** base station.
2. Record the **12-digit MAC address** from the information sticker on the back of the device.

  - Note that your remaining base stations will all become **Secondary** bases.

### Admin Console Configuration

You’ll need to perform the following in 8x8 Admin Console:

### Add Your Devices to 8x8 Admin Console

First, you must add your devices to 8x8 Admin Console so that they can be appropriately assigned.

1. Log into [8x8 Admin Console](https://admin.8x8.com), then click on **Home** > **Devices**.

2. In the 8x8 Admin Console, click on **Add device model**.

3. In the **Add device model** drop-down menu, select **Poly Rove B4 Multi Cell DECT Base Station**, then click **Add device model**.

4. Repeat the above steps for each handset type that will be used:

  - Poly Rove 20 Handset
  - Poly Rove 30 Handset
  - Poly Rove 40 Handset

### Configure User Profiles

Once your devices have been added to your 8x8 service, you can assign them to individual user profiles in 8x8 Admin Console.

1. In 8x8 Admin Console > **Home**, click **Users**.

2. Click to select an existing user from the **Users** list, and click the pencil icon or click **Edit** in the right-side pane.

3. Scroll down to **Voice basic settings**.
4. Click the **Device model** dropdown menu and select the handset model you’re assigning to the user.

  - The **Base device** may pre-populate with your added base unit type.
5. If your company has more than one base unit, or more than one multi cell system, you should add a new **Base device** and assign it a unique, easily-identifiable name:

  1. Click the **Base device** drop-down menu and select **Add new base**.
6. In the drop-down menu select the **Poly Rove B4 Multi Cell DECT Base Station**.
7. In the **Name** field, enter a new display name for the new base unit.
8. Click **Add device**.

9. Select an activation option:

  - **Input MAC address:** This is the recommended option. Enter the MAC address of the base unit.
  - **Use an activation code:** This option allows you to perform device activation later.
10. Click **Save** to complete the changes for this specific user.
11. **If additional handsets will be used with a specific base unit**, repeat this process from [step 1 above](/support/docs/configure-poly-rove-b4-multicell-mode-for-8x8-services#step-1-above) for each additional handset to be assigned:
  - In the **Base device** drop down, be sure to select the same base unit that you added and named earlier.

### Base and Handset Configuration

One base station is designated as the primary, and all handsets will be associated with it.

> CRITICAL:
> 
> - After site surveys, the primary and secondary base stations will be connected to the network
>   - The primary and all secondary base units MUST have the same firmware version before the multicell feature is enabled, otherwise the devices will not sync.
>   - For the latest supported firmware version for the B4 base stations and all handsets, see the Recommended Firmware for Other Supported Phones section in our KnowledgeBase article [What is the recommended firmware for 8x8 phones and analog adapters?](/support/docs/what-is-the-recommended-firmware-for-8x8-phones-and-analog-adapters)
> 
> **ALSO:**
> 
> - **If your hardware was purchased from 8x8**, then both the primary and secondary base stations should already be upgraded to the latest supported 8x8 firmware.
> - If this is not the case, the primary base station will upgrade to the latest supported firmware as soon as it connects to 8x8 provisioning.

#### Primary Base Configuration

The Primary Base Station must be pointed to the 8x8 provisioning server, as follows:

1. Navigate to **System Management** > **Auto Provisioning** in the phone's web interface.
2. In **ITSP Provisioning**, add **https://obicfg.8x8.com/polyrove/** to the **UCSServer** field.
3. Click the **Submit** button.

#### Handset Registration

After configuring the Primary base station, the individual handsets must be registered to the primary station:

1. In the web interface, navigate to **DECT Wireless** > **Handset Summary**.
2. In the **Specific Handsets** section, check the [**1**] check-box, then click the **Register** button.

3. On the handset you wish to register, press the **Menu** button, navigate to the **Settings** icon, and press **Select**.
4. Navigate to **Connectivity** > **Registration**.
5. Navigate to the first empty slot and press **Select**.
6. When prompted, enter the **PIN** code.

  - If the pairing is performed before provisioning with 8x8, the pin code by default will be **0000**.
  - If the base has already been provisioned with 8x8, the Pairing PIN can be found in the 8x8 Admin Console in the user’s **Voice basic settings** section.
  - Once pairing is complete, the handset will display the user’s extension and name. Note that if pairing is done before provisioning, the handset will display **No Sip Registration**.
7. **If there are additional handsets to register**, then repeat the steps above, selecting the appropriate **Specific Handsets** checkbox for each handset (2 for handset 2, 3 for handset 3, etc).

#### Secondary Base Registration

> 
> If your primary and secondary base stations **already** have the latest official firmware installed, you can skip this **Secondary Base Registration** section and continue to the next section: **Multi-Cell Configuration**.
>

If your secondary base stations were purchased from 8x8, they should already have the latest supported firmware applied. To verify that each device has the correct firmware installed:

1. In the web interface, navigate to **Status** > **System Status**.
2. Scroll to the **Product Information** section.
3. Verify the **Value** in **SoftwareVersion** for each device.

4. **Secondary Base Stations** must be pointed to 8x8 Provisioning as follows:
5. In the device's web interface, navigate to **System Management** > **Auto Provisioning**.
6. In the **ITSP Provisioning** section, add **https://obicfg.8x8.com/polyrove/server.cfg** into the **UCSServer** field.
7. Click the **Submit** button.
8. Once the changes are applied, click the **Reboot** button at the top-right.

> IMPORTANT:
> 
> Before proceeding to the next section, confirm that all firmware upgrades have been completed, and all base stations report the correct firmware version.

#### Multi-Cell Configuration

NOTE: For peer-to-peer networks, go to the bottom of this article and follow the steps under "Peer-to-Peer Networks Only". Once the base stations all have the same firmware, enable multicell by accessing the web interface of each base station, starting with the Primary.

1. Navigate to **DECT WIRELESS** > **System**.
2. Under **Multi-Cell Settings**, uncheck the **Default** check box for **Enable** and **ChainID** in the **Default** column.
3. Check the **Enable** checkbox.
4. The **ChainID** can be left at **512**, or another can be entered.
  - **The ChainID must be the same for all base stations**.
5. Click the **Submit** button, and when the changes are applied, click the **Reboot** button.
6. Once all base stations are enabled for multicell, each device should be rebooted to expedite the linking process.

> [!NOTE]
> REGARDING PASSWORDS:
> 
> - Once the multicell network is synchronized, the web interface password for all of the devices will be the same.
> - The password will be generated from the MAC address of the primary base, and will be viewable in the [**8x8 Admin Console**](https://admin.8x8.com) under **Home** > **Devices** > **View Device Report** > **Device Admin Password**.

7. After approximately five minutes, log into the web interface of the primary station and check the status of the multicell group under **DECT Wireless** > **Base Station Group**.
8. Under **Base Station Group Status Summary**, the multicell group will be fully synced when the primary base displays **Primary** and the secondary bases display **Locked** in the **DECT Property** column.

## High Availability

The Rove B4 supports failover if the primary or one of the secondary bases is no longer detected on the network:

- If the primary base station loses connection, one of the secondary base stations will be promoted as the new primary. Once promoted, service will be restored in 2-4 minutes.
- If the original primary base is recovered, it will become a secondary base station, until the DECT chain is restored (see below in [Primary Recovery](/support/docs/configure-poly-rove-b4-multicell-mode-for-8x8-services#primary-recovery) section).
- If the original primary base cannot be recovered, some elements of the system will need to be reconfigured (see below in the [Primary Replacement](/support/docs/configure-poly-rove-b4-multicell-mode-for-8x8-services#primary-replacement) section).
- If any of the secondary base stations become unreachable, the other base stations will take over, assuming that there is overlapping coverage.

## System Backup

After your initial setup, both the DECT chain and the handset information should be backed up.

### Backing Up the DECT Chain

Follow these steps to backup the DECT chain:

1. Log into the web interface of any of the devices and navigate to **DECT Wireless** > **Base Station Group**.
2. In the **Base Station Group Status Summary** section, ensure the primary base station is listed as **Primary** in the **DECT Property** column. Ensure that all the secondary base stations are listed as **Locked** in the **Dect Property Column**.
3. In the **DECT Synch Source Recovery** section, click the **Save Tree** button.
  - > [!NOTE]
> **Note:**
> 
> The tree information is saved locally on the base stations. An external file is not generated.

### Backing Up Handset Information

Follow these steps to back up the handset information:

1. Log into the web interface of any of the base stations and navigate to **Dect Wireless** > **Handset Summary**.

## System Restore: Primary Recovery

In the event that primary goes offline temporarily and then later recovers it will appear as a locked secondary station in the **Base Station Group Status Summary** (see the screenshot below). In the **DECT Chain**, its **RPN (RPN00)** will show up in the tree under the newly promoted secondary **(RPNxx)**.

> [!WARNING]
> Important:
> 
> - Until the original primary is restored, it is important to note that the mutlicell system **will not request any configuration information** from 8x8 provisioning. This means that any changes in 8x8 Admin Console **will not take effect** until the original primary is restored.
> - If the **Dect Chain** was not initially backed up, the original primary base can be restored by powering down all base stations and then powering up only the original primary. Then log in to the web interface, and when its status is displayed as the new primary, you can power up the remaining stations.

**To restore the original primary, follow these steps:**

1. Log into the web interface of any of the base stations and navigate to **Base Station Group** > **DECT Chain**.
2. Click on the **Restore Tree** button.
  - The original primary (**RPN00**) will now appear at the top of the tree.

## System Restore: Primary Replacement

In the event of a primary base failure that cannot be recovered, a new primary must be configured. Due to the effort required, it is recommended that this be done during a maintenance window. **Note:** In this case, the multicell system will continue to operate with the promoted primary until the maintenance window. **Before you begin, first confirm the current status of your base stations:**

- In the web interface, navigate to **DECT Wireless** > **Base Station Group** > **DECT Chain**.

  - A primary that has not recovered will not show up in the **DECT Chain** and will be set to **Unknown** in the **Base Station Group Status Summary** > **DECT Property** column.

**To minimize downtime**, follow the steps below to configure the new primary and reset the the multicell network for the new device:

1. In [**8x8 Admin Console**](https://admin.8x8.com), update the MAC address for each of the users configured to the B4 base to that of the replacement base.
  - **Note:** At this point all the handsets will become deregistered, and calls cannot be placed or received.
2. Connect the new primary base station to the network and log onto its web interface.
3. Follow the instructions above in **Configuration Procedure** > [Secondary Base Registration](/support/docs/configure-poly-rove-b4-multicell-mode-for-8x8-services#secondary-base-registration) for adding a secondary base. If the new base has a different firmware version than the existing group, follow the steps to update the firmware and then enable the multicell on the device.

> NOTE:
> 
> The original primary will always appear in the **Base Station Group Status Summary** with **Connection Lost** in the **Status** column. It cannot be removed.
5. Once the multicell group shows a locked status (see the screenshot above), unplug all the base stations except the base that will be the new primary. This will result in it being promoted from a secondary to a primary. Log in to the web interface of the new primary and confirm its new status.

  - In the **Base Station Group Status Summary**, it will appear as **Primary**, and all powered down base stations will display **Unknown** (see below).

### Final Replacement Steps

These last steps will set the new primary base as the **provisioning primary** in the web interface as follows:

1. Navigate to **System Management** > **Auto Provisioning**.
2. Scroll down to the **ITSP Provisioning** section.
3. Update the **UCSServer** field with the following complete URL:
  - **https://obicfg.8x8.com/polyrove/**
4. Update the **Provisioning Primary** field with the MAC address of the new primary.
5. Click **Submit** to save your changes.
6. **Reboot all base stations, including the primary.**

Once the new primary downloads its configuration, the password for the web interface will change. The new password can be found in 8x8 Admin Console, here:

### Peer-to-Peer Networks Only

For networks set up to use peer-to-peer instead of multicast transmission, follow these steps once the base stations are on the same firmware:

1. Enable multicell by accessing the web interface of each base station, starting with the Primary.
2. Navigate to **DECT WIRELESS** > **System**.
3. Under **Multi-Cell Settings**, uncheck the Default check box for **Enable**, **ChainId**, **DataSyncMethod**, and **DataSyncIP**.

Check the **Enable** checkbox.
  - The **ChainID** can be left at 512, or another can be entered. The **ChainID** must be the same for all base stations.
4. Change the **DataSyncMethod** from **Multicast** to **Peer-to-Peer**.

For the **DataSyncIP**, enter the IP address of the Primary base station. NOTE: It is recommended to configure at least the Primary base station with a static IP address. ![Rove_PeerToPeer.png](https://cdn.us.document360.io/e3a59e39-abd3-4423-964c-0a4008dc5673/Images/Documentation/25836)
5. Click the **Submit** button, and when the changes are applied, click the **Reboot** button.
6. Once all the base stations are enabled for multicell, each device should be rebooted to expedite the linking process

Proceed back to step number 7 under the **Multi-Cell Configuration** section of this article.
