This article explains: - How to find **Device Admin Passwords** and **User Web GUI Passwords** - When MAC passwords vs. default passwords are used - How password behavior changes after activation - Device models affected by the July 14, 2025 user-password update Default passwords for all supported manufacturers --- ## 1. Password Types ## MAC Password (Device Admin Password) Used when the device is: - Activated for service with 8x8, **or** - Running Poly firmware **UC 4.0 or later** Once activated, the device stops accepting the manufacturer's default password. The MAC password can be retrieved only in the **8x8 Admin Console**. --- ## Manufacturer Default Passwords Used when the device is: - **Not yet activated**, **or** - **Factory reset and not reactivated**, **and** - Running Poly firmware **earlier than UC 4.0** ### Default Admin Passwords by Manufacturer | **Manufacturer** | **Default Admin Password** | | --- | --- | | **Cisco** | 198y9w9y891 or 654123 | | **Obihai** | admin | | **Panasonic** | adminpass | | **Poly IP Phones** | 456 | | **Yealink** | admin | --- ## 2. Viewing Device Information & Passwords in 8x8 Admin Console Account admins can view the device model, MAC Address, activation status, assigned user, and both **Device Admin Passwords** and **User Web GUI Passwords**. ## How to Retrieve Device Admin Passwords ### Devices section 1. Log in to [**8x8 Admin Console**](https://admin.8x8.com/) 2. Click the **eye icon** to reveal the password **Retrieving Device Passwords** ### Method 1 — User profile 1. Go to **Home > Setup > Devices** 2. Select **View Device Report** 3. Go to **Home > Users** 2. Select a user (do **not** click Edit) 3. In the right-side panel, scroll to **View basic settings** 4. Use the eye icon to reveal. --- ## 3. User Web GUI Password Updates (Effective July 14, 2025) Beginning **July 14, 2025**, User Web GUI passwords on certain devices now **match the Device Admin Password**. ### Key details: - This password alignment **is not automatic**, except under specific conditions (below). - The process to **retrieve passwords has not changed**—they are obtained from the same Device Report. --- ## When User Passwords Update Automatically User Web GUI passwords become updated to match the Admin password when: ### 1. Manual User Profile Changes Any change saved by a customer admin to a User profile in Admin Console triggers the password update. ### 2. 8x8 Support Actions Bulk or individual password updates performed by 8x8 Support. ### Device Update Behavior Once the new device profile is sent: - The device updates automatically when it becomes **idle**. --- ## 4. Affected Devices (User Password Alignment) These models now (or soon will) share the **same password** for both Admin and User Web GUI login: ### Poly - Edge E - Edge B (planned, not yet implemented) - CCX - SoundPoint - SoundStation - VVX ### Poly DECT - VVX D230 - Poly Rove ### Obi ATAs - All models --- ## 5. Summary: Which Password Should You Use? | **Device State** | **Password Required** | | --- | --- | | **Activated on 8x8** | **MAC Password** (from Admin Console) | | **Not activated / factory reset** | **Manufacturer Default Password** | | **Poly UC 4.0+ firmware** | MAC Password | | **User Web GUI login after July 14, 2025 (affected models)** | **Same as Admin Password** | ## FAQ ****Q: How to Reset/Edit MAC Address on a Device?**** **A: To do this, you will need to** [**deactivate**](/support/docs/deactivate-a-desk-phone-in-8x8-admin-console) **and** [**reactivate**](/support/docs/activate-your-desk-phones-in-8x8-admin-console) **the device.** ****Q: How to find a device's IP address using the 8x8 admin console?**** **A: The device ip address is not stored in the Admin Console, only the MAC address.** To find your device's IP address, you can use your device's network settings (look under Wi-Fi or Ethernet details), use the command prompt on a computer (`ipconfig`), or visit a website like whatismyipaddress.com for your public IP. The method depends on whether you need your internal (private) IP or your external (public) IP.
