# Phone Number Assignment Fails Due to User First Name Length in 8x8 Admin Console

## Symptom

- Phone numbers cannot be assigned to users.
- One of the following banner errors may appear:
  - "User settings saved with errors. Failed at extension update."
  - "User settings saved with errors. Failed at Phone Number assistant sending welcome email."

## Applies To

- Admin Console
- 8x8 Work User Extension Phone Numbers

## Resolution

**As a workaround Workaround:**

- Login to Admin Console, Users, and go to the edit user page.
- Shorten the user's first name to 30 characters or less.
- After shortening the name, successfully save the phone number assignment through the Admin Console.
- This workaround has been tested and confirmed to be successful.

## Cause

One of the system's databases has a 30-character limit for user first names. When a user's first name exceeds this limit, an error occurs during phone number assignment.
