Objective
This article will show you how to update the firmware on a Mitel phone that cannot reach the 8x8 provisioning servers, or is running a MiNet version too old to migrate.
Applies To
Mitel 6905
Mitel 6915
Mitel 6920, 6920w
Mitel 6930, 6930w
Mitel 6940, 6940w
Pre-Requisites
Complete all three of the following before you update the phone's firmware.
Check Your Hardware Version
Before you update the firmware, check when the phone was manufactured.
Mitel began installing a unique device certificate at the factory in 2018. 8x8 uses this certificate to securely provision the phone. A phone that did not ship with one cannot have the certificate added later — no firmware update will add it, including the procedure in this article.
To check the manufacture date:
Turn the phone over and find the white label on the underside.
On the Made in China line, find the four-digit year followed by a two-digit week number. In the example below, 2024 51 is week 51 of 2024.
Compare the date code with the table below.

The manufacture date code on the phone label.
IMPORTANT
The date code is a year and a week number, not a month. 2018 18 means week 18 of 2018, which falls at the end of April 2018.
If the date code is earlier than 2018 18
The phone can still be updated to Mitel SIP firmware using the procedure in this article, and it can be used as a third-party SIP device. However:
Configuring the phone for use with 8x8 service requires manual setup as a third-party SIP device. This is available as a professional services engagement — contact your 8x8 account team.
For phones that are fully managed by 8x8, replace the phone with a supported model.
Check Your Current Firmware Version
Before you begin, you need to know which firmware the phone is running:
Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
Select Status and press the Select soft-key.
Scroll down to Phone Info > Model to see the currently installed firmware version.
For screenshots of these steps, see Configure Mitel Phones for 8x8 Services.
IP Whitelisting
The 8x8 firmware server only allows whitelisted traffic. You must create a case with 8x8 Support as follows:
Find your public IP address (for example, https://ip.me/ will display it).
Create a case with 8x8 Support, and provide the public IP addresses that need whitelisting.
Wait until 8x8 confirms the whitelisting is in place, then continue with the procedure below.
IMPORTANT
Look up your public IP address from a computer on the same network as the phones you are updating. An address found from anywhere else will not be the right one.
Determine Which Firmware You Need
Use the firmware version you found in Check Your Current Firmware Version, together with the symptom you are seeing, to decide which firmware to download. You will type the Path value from this table into the phone in the next section.
If your phone is on a MiNet version older than 3.0.0.65, it cannot be converted to SIP firmware as it is. Use the minet path to bring the phone up to MiNet 3.2.0.27 first, then follow Configure Mitel Phones for 8x8 Services to complete the migration to SIP firmware.
If your phone is on MiNet 3.0.0.65 or later but cannot reach the 8x8 provisioning servers, use the mitel path to download the 8x8-supported SIP firmware directly.
NOTE
Mitel states 3.0.0.65 as the minimum MiNet version required to convert to SIP firmware. 3.2.0.27 is the earliest version 8x8 has verified a successful conversion from. Versions between the two are expected to work, but have not been tested by 8x8.
Update the Phone Firmware
IMPORTANT
This procedure requires the phone's current administrator password. If the phone was previously provisioned on another phone network and you do not have the correct password (other than the default password 22222), you will need to reach out to your previous provider to obtain it.
To update the phone's firmware:
Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
Select Manual Software Upgrade and press the Next soft-key.
Enter 22222 as the Administrator Password and press the Enter soft-key.
In Manual Software Upgrade:
Change the Download Protocol to HTTP.
Enter pcfw.8x8.com as the HTTP Server.
Enter 80 as the HTTP Port.
Enter either minet or mitel as the HTTP Path, using the table above to choose.
Press the Save soft-key.
The phone will automatically reboot and install the firmware from the 8x8 server. Do not power off or disconnect the phone during this process.

Example — using the minet path.

Example — using the mitel path.
IMPORTANT
pcfw.8x8.com is not the same server as mitel.8x8.com. The 8x8 provisioning server (mitel.8x8.com) is used during normal migration, as described in Configure Mitel Phones for 8x8 Services. The firmware server described in this article (pcfw.8x8.com) is used only when the phone cannot reach that provisioning server, or is too old to migrate. Take care to enter the correct server for the procedure you are following.
The phone may reboot more than once. Allow several minutes for the update to complete.
Confirm the New Firmware Version
Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
Select Status and press the Select soft-key. The new firmware version is displayed in Status > Phone Info > Model.
What to Do Next
If you used the minet path: the phone is now on MiNet 3.2.0.27 and can be converted to SIP firmware. Follow Configure Mitel Phones for 8x8 Services to complete the migration.
If you used the mitel path: the phone is now on 8x8-supported SIP firmware. Continue to Obtaining a Device's IP Address for 8x8 Provisioning to finish provisioning the phone for 8x8 services.
If the Phone Still Cannot Be Updated
If the phone does not download firmware after following this procedure, confirm that your public IP addresses have been whitelisted and that the phone is on the same network as the IP address you provided. If the phone still cannot be updated, contact Mitel support or your Mitel partner to obtain firmware for the phone, or to upgrade your Mitel system.
